Parents of Year-Round Students Seek Child Care

With the new year-round school already in progress, the CCR&R office is constantly receiving calls from parents seeking a child care facility or home that will provide child care in conjunction with the new yearly schedule. If your center or home is going to be providing care for children attending the year-round school, please contact CCR&R or the Extension Center and fill us in on your fees and schedule. We will gladly get the word out to parents.

Videos Available for Hearing Impaired Children

UCP Stepping Stones Learning Center has recently acquired a series of videos using sign language for children that are hearing impaired. The center would like to share these videos with other hearing impaired children in the community. The videos may be checked out for 7 days. Titles include: "Rosie's Walk", "Red Riding Hood", "Sign Songs", "Rudolph", "Dinner at Home", "Fast Food Lunch", "Birthday Party", "The Grocery Store", "Visiting The Dentist", "Fireman, Policeman & Mailman", "Afternoon in the Park", "Planning a Fire Escape Plan", "Afternoon Activities at Home" and "Waking Up & Getting Dressed". To check out a video, contact Patricia Freeland, Family Services Coordinator at Stepping Stones Learning Center at 1550 Kelly Drive, or call her at 708-5599.

Scholarships for Child Care Providers

Day care Services Association in Chapel Hill administers the T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps) Program. There are seven different scholarship programs available to help child care providers complete coursework in early childhood education and increase their compensation. Available from the Lee County Child Care R&R are applications and fact sheets for the following scholarships:

  • Child Development Associate Assessment: (CDA) This is a nationally recognized credential awarded to individuals who have demonstrated competency through both experience and education in working with young children, ages 0-5. Provider must pay 15% of the assessment fee. A $200 bonus is awarded upon completion.

  • The NC Early Childhood Credential Scholarship Program: Funds are available for teachers, directors, and family child care providers to attend a community college to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education. The scholarship recipient, the center/home and the T.E.A.C.H. program pay part of the cost for attending school.

  • Early Childhood Associate Degree Scholarship: This is a program for teachers, directors, and family child care providers. Scholarship money is used to attend a community college to earn a North Carolina Early Childhood Credential. 80% of the cost of tuition and books is covered by the scholarship, 20% by the individual or a combination of center and individual. Upon completion, the provider may be eligible to receive $100 bonus awarded by the state of N.C. Contact the Lee County CCR&R office at the Extension Service at 775-5624 for scholarship applications.

    Child Care Worker Certification

This program is designed for individuals entering the field of early childhood education as well as those already employed in the field who desire to improve their job knowledge and skills. Certified participants have completed training in introduction to child development, creative & learning activities, safety, family and community support. Credits earned may be transferred toward an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood and/or a Child Care Worker Diploma, provided the student meets the entrance requirements for that degree/diploma program. Two semesters with a total of 17-18 credit hours are required for graduation. For more information regarding this and other training programs for child care providers, contact your local community college or Child Care Resource and Referral Office.
