With the new year-round school already in progress, the CCR&R office is constantly receiving calls from parents seeking a child care facility or home that will provide child care in conjunction with the new yearly schedule. If your center or home is going to be providing care for children attending the year-round school, please contact CCR&R or the Extension Center and fill us in on your fees and schedule. We will gladly get the word out to parents.
UCP Stepping Stones Learning Center has recently acquired a series of videos using sign language for children that are hearing impaired. The center would like to share these videos with other hearing impaired children in the community. The videos may be checked out for 7 days. Titles include: "Rosie's Walk", "Red Riding Hood", "Sign Songs", "Rudolph", "Dinner at Home", "Fast Food Lunch", "Birthday Party", "The Grocery Store", "Visiting The Dentist", "Fireman, Policeman & Mailman", "Afternoon in the Park", "Planning a Fire Escape Plan", "Afternoon Activities at Home" and "Waking Up & Getting Dressed". Day care Services Association in Chapel Hill administers the T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps) Program. There are seven different scholarship programs available to help child care providers complete coursework in early childhood education and increase their compensation. Available from the Lee County Child Care R&R are applications and fact sheets for the following scholarships:
This program is designed for individuals entering the field of early childhood education as well as those already employed in the field who desire to improve their job knowledge and skills. Certified participants have completed training in introduction to child development, creative & learning activities, safety, family and community support. Credits earned may be transferred toward an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood and/or a Child Care Worker Diploma, provided the student meets the entrance requirements for that degree/diploma program. Two semesters with a total of 17-18 credit hours are required for graduation. The 1998 Family Child Care State Conference will be held in three locations (eastern, central, western) across the state on Sept. 12, 1998. The Conferences will be held at:
The Extension Service and the 4-H School-Age Care Project are offering 20 scholarships to each region for Family Child Care Providers who have school-age children in their programs. These scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You must respond quickly if you would like to apply. The terms of these scholarships will be on a REIMBURSEMENT basis. If you would like to attend and are interested in receiving the scholarship, contact Shelley Gardner, Assistant Project Director, 4-H SAC Project at 919-515-9569.
Classes will be offered beginning August 20 and 22 for eight weeks. Child Care Credentials II will also begin October 17 on Saturdays. Call the community college for details and other course offerings.
