JOHNSTON COUNTY HOME HORTICULTURE

February Gardening To-Do

This ice we had a few weeks back was unreal!  I have to say winters in North Carolina are much more treacherous than I ever thought they would be.  Well, 6 weeks until spring, or so says our groundhog friend in Punxsatawney, PA.

Fertilizing and Pruning are the two main jobs for gardeners in February. Using slow-release fertilizer reduces the chance of nutrient runoff polluting our streams and groundwater.

TREES, SHRUBS & ORNAMENTALS

Spring-blooming shrubs bloom on the previous growing season's wood, so wait till after they've bloomed to prune them. Examples                                include azalea, rhododendron, forsythia, spirea, flowering quince, kerria, pieris, weigela, and climbing or rambling roses.
