Welcome to the Johnston County web site for information on Red Imported
Fire Ants, scientific name Solenopsis
invicta. One of the most aggressive species of ants to
invade North America. Not only is this ant invasive, it can also be damaging to property and farm equipment as well as dangerous to people, pets and livestock. Only a very small amount of the population is allergic to the toxin injected by the sting of Red Imported Fire Ants. Even for those who are not allergic to the toxin in the sting, it produces a nasty burning sensation. For those small few who are allergic to Fire Ant stings it can be a deadly experience. When Fire Ants sting it is rarely only one sting. When Fire Ants attack, they attack in large numbers and when the first ant stings it triggers a reaction that causes all the ants to sting at one time. Unlike bees, ants can sting up to 20 times in succession injecting toxin with each sting. |
