Red Imported Fire Ants being attacked by a parasitic fly
Welcome to the Johnston County web site for information on Red Imported Fire Ants, scientific name Solenopsis invicta.  One of the most aggressive species of ants to invade North America.

Not only is this ant invasive, it can also be damaging to property and farm equipment as well as dangerous to people, pets and livestock.  Only a very small amount of the population is allergic to the toxin injected by the sting of Red Imported Fire Ants.  Even for those who are not allergic to the toxin in the sting, it produces a nasty burning sensation.

For those small few who are allergic to Fire Ant stings it can be a deadly experience.  When Fire Ants sting it is rarely only one sting.  When Fire Ants attack, they attack in large numbers and when the first ant stings it triggers a reaction that causes all the ants to sting at one time.  Unlike bees, ants can sting up to 20 times in succession injecting toxin with each sting.

On this site there is information on problems caused by Red Imported Fire Ants; a brief history including where they came from and how they arrived here; how to identify this ant from other ants in the landscape; how to control Fire Ants using several different methods; and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.  If there is something you would like to see added to this site contact us and we will try to make the information available on the site as soon as possible.
