Farmers Market Opens for 2008 The Roanoke Valley Farmers Market opens for 2008 on Saturday May 10th. The market, on NC Highway 158 West in Roanoke Rapids, will be open every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm. Opening day this year will be “Strawberry Day.” We will have several venders offering both fresh strawberries and strawberry ice cream and other deserts, as well as free strawberry treats to sample and recipes to try at home. Halifax County Cooperative Extension’s Matthew Stevens will be on hand to provide tips for growing strawberries in the home garden. The market features vendors of many kinds, from fruit and vegetable farmers, to craft, baked good, live plant, cut flower, clothing and jewelry vendors. Additional vendors are welcome, though all vendors must be approved prior to selling at the market. All produce must be locally grown, with at least 50% grown by the vendor himself or herself. Growers may supplement with other locally grown produce as long as at least 50% is grown themselves. Additionally, the Roanoke Valley Farmers Market will be open Wednesdays this year from 8 to 2, starting May 14. There ill not be a farmers market in Halifax on Wednesday as in years past now that the Roanoke Valley Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays. In addition to traditional market vendors, we plan to offer educational classes during market days through Cooperative Extension and special events during the market season. Be on the look out for these announcements. Additional vendors are always welcome at either market. For more information, contact Matthew Stevens at 583-5161.
