Want to Become a Master Gardener?

If you want to know more about the soil, buds and bees, enroll in the Guilford County Master Gardener Program, offered by the Guilford County Cooperative Extension Service.

The course provides 40 hours of extensive training in basic botany, soils, trees, insects, diseases, woody ornamentals, lawns, vegetables, pruning, fertilizers, pesticide safety and more.
Graduates are expected to give back to the community by volunteering on designated community projects.
Applicants for the program should have a high degree of gardening interest, strong communication skills and be able to give 40 hours of post-training volunteer time.
Scheduled training programs in Guilford County begin in January.

Sharing your expertise and time with others?

Do You Have:

  At least three hours of time per month that you can volunteer to the Cooperative Extension Service of Guilford County as we help you put knowledge to work?

If You Answered "Yes"

to the last question, and any of the others, our Master Gardener Program might be an ideal opportunity for you!

How to Become a Master Gardener

The first requirement is the desire to help others.  Next is a personal commitment to complete the required training, and then serve a minimum of forty volunteer hours.

To place your name on the list of those interested in becoming a Master Gardener:

Request an application form via one of the following means:
Send an email to the Extension Agent, Karen Neill.  In the email, specifically request a Master Gardener.  Also, state your

Call the Agricultural Extension office at 336-375-5876.
Pick one up at the Agricultural Extension office at
3309 Burlington Road in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Return the completed form to the Agricultural Extension office by mid-October.

Enrollment is limited.  Please don't push the deadline.

Basic training begins in early January and runs through March or early April.  Classes are held in the auditorium of the Agricultural Extension Center every Wednesday for 8:30 a.m. until noon.

After completion of the basic training, you should attend continuing education courses offered on the first Wednesday of most months and at various other times and locations throughout the year.  See the GCMGV Events Calendar for more specific current information.

During your first year, you must complete at least 40 hours of training and give at least 40 hours of post-training volunteer time to the Extension Service's Horticulture Program.  After the first year, you must complete at least 20  hours of refresher training and give at least 20 hours of volunteer time.
