Special Announcement Gaston County Solid Waste & Recycling Division is conducting their second Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at Biggerstaff Park in Dallas, NC. Waste items accepted include: latex and oil based paints, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides and herbicides, used oil and oil filters, tires, and cleaners. Solid Waste & Recycling Division personnel will be on hand to take your items and ensure they are disposed of properly. If you have a question about whether or not an item can be accepted for disposal, please contact the Gaston County Environmental Analyst at (704) 922-0267 or the Recycling Coordinator at (704) 922-7729 prior to May 17, 2008. Also, the Gaston County 4-H Explorer's Club is partnering with the Mecklenburg County Air Quality Division to conduct free gasoline cap checks during the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. It only takes about 10 seconds to check your vehicles gas cap, and if yours is defective, we'll replace it free of charge. A defective gas cap can allow approximately 30 gallons of gas to escape you gas tank through vaporization each year. This represents about 200 pounds of air pollution and, at today's prices, over $100 out of your pocket. Directions to Biggerstaff Park: From Hwy. 321, take the Cherryville Exit (Hwy 279 W) Turn left, just passed the Citizens Resource Center on to Leisure Lane Follow the signs to the Household Hazardous Waste collection site For more information about the Solid Waste & Recycling Division, visit their website at: http://www.co.gaston.nc.us/SolidWaste/HouseholdHazardousWaste.htm
