NC Snake Pictures / Rough Earth Snake

Nonvenomous; adult size 7 - 13 inches. This small very secretive snake is brown with a reddish-orange belly. It is usually encountered only when digging in rich earth. The rough earth snake hides under leaves, decaying logs, in mulch and compost piles, and eats worms, slugs, snails, and small frogs.
