There are many types of ants. Some are a minor nuisance, and others can do serious damage to your home (carpenter ants) or even cause you and your pets pain and suffering (fire ants). DEALING WITH ANTS
Controlling Ants in the Home
Ants are omniverous. This means they like everything we eat. Store food in airtight containers or keep in the refrigerator. If ants have moved in to your home, begin by finding the ant nest. Look for a "trail of ants" leading to a food source and follow the trail back toward the nest.
If you don't see a line of ants, begin with a careful cleaning to remove all possible food sources. Then place tiny piles of sugar every 2 to 3 feet in the area where ants are seen. They will form a trail from the nest to the sugar, and this may help you find the way to the ant colony.
Ant baits work better than sprays. The ants carry the bait back to their nest. Be sure you understand directions before using any insecticide. Treat cracks where ants crawl. Do not treat entire floors, walls, inside of drawers, tops of counters or cabinets. Do not get ant killer in food, on dishes, or cooking utensils. Store ant killer materials in their original containers, and keep them in a locked non-food cabinet out of reach of children and pets. back to the list
