Project Learning Tree's PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide is packed with interdisciplinary activities, each tailored to specific grade levels and learning objectives. The activity guide is designed to meet the common components of national education reform by using the constructivist approach to learning, whole language teaching, cooperative learning, problem solving, and authentic assessments.
These materials provide educators the tools they need to bring the environment into their classrooms – and their students into the environment.
The PreK-8 Guide has 96 activities that covers such topics as water and air quality, ecology, urban environments, and recycling. See the online Topic Index for a complete listing of activities that address various topics. In the guide, activities are organized into five main themes: diversity, interrelationships, systems, structure and scale, and patterns of change.
In addition, the activities contain:
- An overview, background content, step-by-step teachers' guide
- Grade level recommendations
- Concepts, skills, and curriculum objects
- Needed materials (many of which are free, easy to obtain, or low cost!)
- Activity timeline so you know how long it will take to prepare and present the activity
- List of related activities
- Authentic assessment opportunities
- Reproducible student pages
- Reading and technology connections
- Differentiated instruction enhancements
To receive the materials, you must attend a professional development workshop. Workshops are held throughout the state and led by trained PLT Facilitators. To see a listing of upcoming PLT workshops in North Carolina, please take a look at the workshop calendar.
The PLT PreK-8 Guide is correlated to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, as well as North Carolina's Essential Standards for Science and Social Studies (2012). Correlations can be found on the PLT Correlation page for K-8 as well as high school.
