Current Projects and FundingLeBude, A.V. and P.M. Jett. 2008-2010. Using vapor pressure deficit to control intermittent mist frequency. HRI $5000. The core of this project is designed to offer growers a dynamic means of controlling intermittent mist frequency based on the rooting environment. Research began in Summer 2008. LeBude, A.V. and T.G. Ranney. 2005-2009. Vegetative propagation of Rhododendron flammeum and R. austrinum. SE Chapter ARS. $4000. During this project we have optimized propagation protocols for rooting stem cuttings and mound layering stock plants. LeBude, A.V. 2006-2010. Effect of ABA application
and desiccation to woody ornamentals. Valent
USA $10,000. LeBude, A.V., J. Neal, and J.C. Conner. 2008-2009. Preemergence herbicide applications in container grown native azaleas. Many growers have barely breathed the word herbicide near native azaleas in container production for fear of crop failure. Laborious hand weeding has been the primary mode of weed suppression. This project should produce protocols that both reduce production costs and determine herbicide efficacy in these not-so-delicate natives. LeBude, A.V., J. Neal, and T.G. Ranney. 2007-2009. Preemergence herbicide application to wet and dry foliage of select species of Calycanthus. NCNLA $2000. LeBude, A.V. and F.A. Blazich. 2006-present. Propagation protocols for new or underutilized plant materials. NCNLA $4000. Frank and I have rooted (or not) stem cuttings of Persia thunbergii, Daphniphyllum macrocarpum, Osmanthus heterophyllus ’Variegtus’, Castanopsis, and other taxa. LeBude, A.V., P. Lindsey, A. Spafford, L. Bradley, M. Wallace, and C.D. Ruth. 2005-2007. Improving the landscape design skills of the North Carolina Green Industry. N.C. Extension and Engagement $4000. In this two-day workshop, landscape designers presented and modeled the elements of the landscape design process. Attendees participated in guided, hands-on experiential learning that was peer-reviewed and critiqued by instructors. LeBude, A.V., B. Upchurch, and J. Neal. 2006-2008. Preemergence herbicide applications to rootstocks prior to grafting. do not affect grafting success. Research conducted on Highland Creek Nursery and grafted by Brian Upchurch. Results have been published widely. |
