Best
results and the least chance of tree injury are obtained using 0-46-0 (triple
super phosphate) fertilizer at a rate of 7.5 to 10 pounds of material per
100 feet of row. Care should be taken to ensure the fertilizer is placed at
a depth of 12 inches, so that it will be right below the root system of the
newly set transplant. Use of a coulter in front of the shank is highly recommended
to minimize surface disturbance and leave a smooth surface for transplanting.
The transplant should be set into the slit left by the shank. If terrain permits,
it may be easier to run the transplanter perpendicular to the direction the
subsoiler was run and set transplants when each slit is crossed.
Other materials, such as 18-46-0 or 19-19-19, are NOT recommended for deep in-row incorporation due to the potential for salt injury to the young transplants.
