There are educational and applied research programs dealing with every aspect of Christmas tree production in North Carolina at NC State University's Mountain Horticultural Crops Research & Extension Center (MHCR&EC), on the NCSU campus in Raleigh, and at other locations in the state. Emphasis is placed on the sustainability of Fraser fir production in western North Carolina, helping growers protect the environment, Christmas tree genetics, and growing Christmas trees in the piedmont and coastal plain.
