Teaching Nutrition through Games

Which Food Group?

Submitted by Kathryn Naylor, Burke County

Purpose

  • To show the different food groups represented in a prepared meal. It will also show the participants the ease of attaining the RDA.

Objective

  • For each participant to show which food groups are represented in their picture cards.

Time

  • 15 - 20 minutes

Materials Needed

  • Strips of paper in yellow (bread), green (vegetable), orange (fruit), red (meat), white (dairy), black (fats)
  • Picture cards of prepared foods such as spaghetti, pizza, salad, etc.

Preparation

  • Hand out one picture per participant upon arrival.

Activity

  • After teaching the section on the Food Guide Pyramid in Session 1, have participants come up and take one slip of paper for each food group represented in their picture. For example, a picture of a cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup would have two yellow, one white and one green.
  • After participants have finished taking the slips, have each one tell the class why they picked those slips.
