Teaching Nutrition through Games

Food Guide Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Kathryn Naylor, Burke County

Purpose

To help the children better learn the food guide pyramid

Objective

For the children to find the hidden foods and place them in their proper box on the food guide pyramid

Time

10 - 15 minutes

Materials Needed

Felt food guide pyramid and felt food cut outs

Preparation

Hide felt foods in the room. Tape the pyramid on wall

Activity

Explain to the children that there are some hidden treasures around the room. Tell them that the treasures are food. Tell them you would like for them to find the foods and return them to their correct food group on the felt food guide pyramid. Or you could have the children find the foods and hold onto them until all have been found. Then individually call on the children to come up, tell what food they have and where it belongs.

Follow-Up

In the next session be sure to ask the children if they remember what we did last week. You can then hold up a food from each group and have the children tell you what group it belongs to.
