Teaching Nutrition through Games

Supermarket Shuffle

Submitted by Donna Fox, Burke County

Purpose

  • To teach or reinforce recognition of grocery store bargains along with the lessons that are taught in OFL session 2 or EFNEP "Planning Makes a Difference" or "Making the Most of Your Food Dollars"

Objective

  • To identify good bargains from grocery store ads

Time

  • 15 - 20 minutes

Materials Needed

  • Grocery store circulars
  • Cardboard, glue, scissors
  • Laminate
  • Sheet with a list of products and prices
  • Skill builder for the winner or winning team

Preparation

  • Find around 50 to 100 "bargains" in grocery store circular and cut out.
  • Cut out cardboard circles to fit your "bargains" on.
  • Glue "bargains" to the circles and laminate if possible.
  • Have a sheet with all of your "bargains" listed. You may want to make notes next to the "bargain" and tell why and how you are saving money. Good teaching opportunity. Example: Buy one/get one free Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs save $2.69 but if you buy Gwaltney chicken franks at $1.09 you would save more

Activity

  • Place all the circles around the table.
  • Divide participants into teams.
  • Tell them that you are going to read off a "bargain" and each person will have a chance to find that "bargain" and pick it up.
  • The team with the most "bargains" at the end of the game is the winner.
  • Reinforce the rules that no one can push or shove or grab another person's "bargain."
  • The winning team gets to choose skill builders.
