How Much Is Too Much

Purpose/Objective

 

  • To identify and measure correct serving sizes.

Time

 

  • 15 minutes

Materials Needed

 

  • Food Guide Pyramid
  • Food models,
  • Different size paper plates, paper cups
  • Wet and dry measuring cups
  • Flour
  • Peas
  • A knife.

Preparation

 

  • Buy different size paper plates and cups.
  • Tape Food Guide Pyramid to wall or use display board.

Activity

 

  • Show the Food Guide Pyramid. Explain that the Food Guide Pyramid is an outline to daily food choices for healthy Americans over age two who consume the typical American diet.
  • Go over all food groups and how many servings are recommended for each.
  • Show wet and dry measuring cups. Ask if they know what the difference is between these measuring tools. Answers will vary. Explain the difference between the wet and dry measuring cups.
  • Demonstrate how to measure using the peas for the wet cup and flour and knife for the dry cup.
  • Take the different size plates and display food models so that participants can see how food looks on various sizes and colors.
  • Wrap up the activity by pairing groups off with a total of 5 groups. Assign each group a food group. Have them work together to find out how many servings are in each group and what a serving is.
