Benefits of Breastfeeding

Purpose

  • To reinforce the benefits of breastfeeding for prenatal women or teens

Objective

  • The pregnant woman or teen will be able to: Talk comfortably about breastfeeding; describe at least two reasons someone might choose to breastfeed; and indicate where she could get more information about breastfeeding.

Time

  • 30 minutes

Materials Needed

  • Handouts: "Breastfeeding, A Special Relationship" and 12 and 13 in English and Spanish from the Teaching Materials Manual
  • "Show and Tell" items

Preparation

  • Gather items needed.
  • Review and handouts and lesson.
  • Make copies of handouts for participants.

Activity

  • Greet the participants.
  • Display the collection of show and tell items on a table or counter.
  • Tell the participants that women who breastfeed their babies often talk about the advantages of this method. Ask if they can figure out what advantages these props represent.
  • Take time to listen to participants' concerns, answer questions and share your experience related to the lesson.
  • Distribute the handout.
  • Summarize the lesson information.
  • Make arrangements for future contacts if needed.
