Current Insect Populations
Summary - Week of May 21, 2012

Overview

Codling moth populations have remained stable across Henderson County during the past week, with the overall trap capture average increasing only from 9.1 to 10.4 moths per trap.  Based on Degree Day accumulations and weather forecasts, codling moth could remain a threat for a couple more weeks.  In Polk County, however, first generation flight should be essentially completed.

Tufted apple bud moth populations in Henderson County are now at the stage where a single application of insecticide (Altacor, Delegate or Intrepid) will control the first generation.  This window of opportunity will remain open for the next two weeks.

Oriental fruit moth trap captures increased slightly over the past week, and this probably represents the very early stages of second generation adult emergence.  Second-generation populations are generally quite low and special sprays are not necessary.  In addition, insecticides applied for codling moth or TABM will serve to further suppress OFM.

Secondary pests (aphids, leafhoppers and mites) remain low in sample orchards.  Green apple aphids are just beginning to appear, but biological control agents (lady beetles, lacewings, syrphid flies) should help keep populations at low levels.  It is still early for potato leafhoppers and mites.
