Current Orchard Conditions

Summary - Week of June 30, 2008

Insect Report for July 1, 2008:

Trap captures of all key pests declined this week, with average codling moth captures declining from an average of 4.2 last week to 3.0 this week, and Oriental fruit moth declining from 12.5 last week to 5.6 this week.  For both insects, trap captures were considerably lower in those orchards using mating disruption. Tufted apple bud moth trap captures declined from 67.0 per trap last week to about 12.0 per trap this week.

Codling moth degree days in Henderson County were 1103 as of June 30, which indicates we are between generations.  High trap captures were limited to those traps adjacent to bin piles, where moth emergence is usually later than normal. In addition, damage surveys conducted from June 30 to July 1 indicated that there was minimal damage caused by first generation codling moth. Significant damage was observed in only 2 of more than 30 orchards surveyed. Optimum timing for second generation is expected to be between 1300 and 1400 degree days, which, based on weather forecasts, is predicted between July 9 and 15.
