The purpose of Scott Sink’s research in Llancahue is to gain a better understanding of the native forests within its boundaries and use that knowledge to develop a silvicultural prescription to manage the second growth forests for old growth conditions. In 2007 and 2008, he measured 25 0.1-hectare plots throughout the watershed covering both old growth and second growth forests. Using the data he gathered on overstory structure, understory composition, coarse woody debris, and tree growth rates, he will develop a specific silvicultural prescription to restore old growth conditions within second growth stands.
