Strengthening Collaboration of Forestry Students and Faculty at North Carolina State University, Universidad Austral de Chile, and the Universidad de Concepción The recent free trade agreement with Chile creates new opportunities and challenges for the US forestry sector. Relative to the US South, Chile is highly competitive in the plantation forestry sector, faces many parallel environmental concerns in the natural forest sector, and serves as a laboratory for forest management and policy responses to water scarcity. Collaboration with Chile in research and education will enhance the global competence of students and faculty at North Carolina State University, thus contributing to US competitiveness. The NC State Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has strong research and education programs across the spectrum of forest and water management issues, including intensive plantations, forest conservation, and watershed management. Thus, we are well positioned to build on the existing research linkages with Chile that faculty members have developed in the forestry sector. Program Goals: 1.
