The blacklight trap is monitored by cooperators within the
county to provide a record of the flight activity of the corn
earworm moth. This record assists in the determination of the
onset of the major moth flight so producers and scouts can
increase the frequency and intensity of scouting for eggs. Moth
counts are taken on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and reported to
the Extension Center. Counts taken on Wednesday and Friday are
two-night counts and Monday counts are from three days. The
Coakley trap is located 5 miles east of Tarboro and is maintained
by Charles Coker, farm manager of Piney Grove & Mayo Farms. The
trap at Rocky Mount is located 12 miles west of Tarboro and is
maintained by Tom Porter, cotton grower. The trap at
Conetoe is located 6 miles east of Tarboro and is maintained by
Brandon Wilson, farm manager for Whitehurst Farms. CEW = Corn
Earworm, ECB = European Corn Borer, STB = Stinkbug, - = no data.
We have completed the operations of the blacklight traps on August 27, 2003.
We would like to extend a special thanks for those cooperators who have
diligently counted insects this year!

The following data is a research project being conducted in the county which
samples for bollworm male moths captured through the use of a pheremone trap.
Data is collected once a week on Tuesday. A nearby corn field was checked for
the presence of corn earworms and on July 15 there were 49% of the ears
containing a corn earworm (bollworm) larvae, but that number dropped to 28% of
the ears with a corn earworm on July 22 indicating that the larvae are beginning
to drop to the ground to pupate into a moth. The numbers below indicate the number
of male bollworm moths captured on an average of a 2 trap set.
