The blacklight trap is monitored by cooperators within the
county to provide a record of the flight activity of the corn
earworm moth. This record assists in the determination of the
onset of the major moth flight so producers and scouts can
increase the frequency and intensity of scouting for eggs. Moth
counts are taken on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and reported to
the Extension Center. Counts taken on Wednesday and Friday are
two-night counts and Monday counts are from three days. The
Coakley trap is located 5 miles east of Tarboro and is maintained
by Charles Coker, farm manager of Piney Grove & Mayo Farms. The
trap at West Edgecombe is located 14 miles west of Tarboro and is
maintained by Carolyn Lancaster, cotton grower. The trap at
Conetoe is located 6 miles east of Tarboro and is maintained by
Brandon Wilson, farm manager for Whitehurst Farms. CEW = Corn
Earworm, ECB = European Corn Borer, STB = Stinkbug, - = no data.
Monitoring for the bollworm moths was discontinued on August 30,2002. We would
like to extend a special thanks for those cooperators who have diligently
counted the insects this year!
