13 November 2003 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Thursday, November 13 :

Disease Update - 30 October: Many disease sources have either been disked up and/or succumbed to frost.... including the ones in DE, far eastern VA (Painter), southeastern NY (Riverhead), and Tarboro, NC. We are still awaiting word on the status of others. Any information on the current status of downy mildew outbreaks is greatly appreciated. Please contact Cucurbit Forecast Leader Dr. Gerald Holmes (gerald_holmes@ncsu.edu) or your Forecaster Thomas Keever (thomas_keever@ncsu.edu) if you have any news. Thanks!

***** The Weather...... southern / southeastern U.S. ***** Strong high pressure is building in behind a cold front. The front will move through southern FL and deep South TX today. Other than some scattered showers and thunderstorms in deep South TX, no rain is expected. The big news is the windy and sharply colder conditions moving into the southern U.S. The first freeze of the season will occur tonight in many areas. Recent daytime highs well into the 70's and 80's will be replaced by 50's and 60's, though southern FL will remain in the 70's and 80's. Dry weather is expected for the next several days in most locations. An upper-level disturbance may bring some rain to the TN Valley / lower MS Valley region by Saturday. Another frontal system will be gearing up in the central and southern plains this weekend and moving east, affecting the southern / southeastern U.S. next week. A few scattered showers may occur in the Southeast ahead of that system on Monday.

***** The Forecasts *****

Southern / Southeastern United States.... Strongly Moderate to HIGH Risk for deep South TX today, Moderate Risk for that area on Friday. Low Risk for all other areas Thursday and Friday. Unfavorable conditions are expected for all areas Saturday and Sunday. Mixed conditions may appear on Monday in southern TX.... or parts of the Southeast.... on Monday. A hard freeze is expected for central NC tonight, ending the disease season in that region.
