26 August 2003 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Tuesday, August 26 :

***** Disease Update - 26 August ..... Downy Mildew has been reported from the mountains of South Carolina. Our thanks to Tony Keinath.... who informs us of a serious outbreak of downy mildew on pumpkin in Greenville County, near the town of Piedmont. Around 2/3 of a 5-10 acre field is heavily infected. Heavy sporulation is occurring on older leaves of the plants. Some necrosis is present. As this site is fairly close to the Horse Shoe, NC location in Henderson County, users should refer to the trajetories out of Horse Shoe to determine where spores from this site are moving.

***** Disease Update - 21 August .....We have two more reports of downy mildew, both from the mid-Atlantic states. One is from Hunterdon county, NJ, near the town of Pittstown. A 5-acre field of pumpkin and winter squash is 20% infected. The other is from Kent County, Delaware. A 40-acre field of pumpkin is 10% infected. Both outbreaks are rated as moderately serious, and of course recent weather has been favorable in both locations. We will add the NJ location as another source. Users are asked to use the Painter, VA site and the Pittstown, NJ site as indicators of spore travel from the DE outbreak.... as the DE outbreak is situated favorable between the VA and NJ sites.

***** The Weather...... southern / eastern U.S. ***** Partly cloudy skies with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms across the south each day. There is also a chance of showers in the upper Ohio Valley / upper mid-Atlantic / Northeast today and Wednesday, associated with a cold front moving into these regions. A few showers are possible in other sections of the Ohio Valley on Wednesday. Sunny to partly cloudy and hot for other areas, with no rain expected.

***** The Forecasts *****

Southeast...... mixed to favorable weather but little danger to other regions. Strongly Moderate Risk for the southern half of FL each day. Moderate Risk for southern GA and nearby areas of northern FL each day.

Mid-Atlantic.... trajectories moving east or ENE both days. Risk of disease development will be near the sources and toward the coast. Moderate Risk Tuesday for eastern MD, DE, eastern PA, NJ, extreme southeast NY, and southern New England. Low Risk south of DE through NC. Moderate Risk Wednesday for eastern VA, eastern MD, DE, southeast PA, and NJ. Low Risk otherwise.

Ohio Valley and southern Appalachian Mountains.... unfavorable conditions today for these regions with Low Risk to cucurbit growing areas. Low Risk continues for the mountains on Wednesday. Cold front approaching will bring mixed conditions to the Ohio Valley. Moderate Risk Wednesday near the source at Vincennes, plus areas of central IN as the trajectory moves ENE.

Texas.... partly cloudy and hot with isolated or scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms for most areas. Isolated showers near the source in deep south TX. Trajectories move WNW and northwest, along and west of the Rio Grande. Low to Weakly Moderate Risk for southern TX Tuesday and Wednesday (deep south, coastal bend, Rio Grande Plains).
