FORECAST SUMMARY: Tuesday, August 12 :

***** Disease Update - 12 August ..... Several new reports of downy mildew in the past two weeks. These include a serious outbreak on pumpkin research plots in Painter, VA.... two discoveries in central NC (cantaloupe and summer squash in a backyard garden in Wake County; 20% of 3 fields totalling 50 arces of pumpkin in Montgomery and neighboring Richmond County)... and two discoveries in the southern Appalachian Mountains (one 1/5-acre field of pumpkin in Johnson County, TN; a very small plot of summer squash in Henderson County, NC). Recent weather has been favorable in all of these locations. The disease location at Charleston, SC is being dropped, as the fields in question were disked several weeks ago.

A stationary front stretches from the Northeast down through the Ohio Valley. This front will dissipate on Thursday as higher pressures move in. Finally, a disturbance now east of the Bahamas will move west during the next 48 hours. It may impact FL late in the two-day period. Partly to mostly cloudy skies over the southern and eastern U.S. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected for most areas. More numerous showers and heavy rain is likely near the disturbance in the Gulf. Highs in the 80's and 90's, lows in the 60's and 70's.

***** The Forecasts ***** Mixed to favorable conditions for disease development are expected for nearly all locations. The bulk of the deposition will occur near the source regions. Trajectories will move similarly each day. Strongly Moderate Risk Tuesday and Wednesday for the southern half of FL, far northern FL and southern GA, central NC and southside VA, the southern Appalachian Mountains, and eastern KY. Moderate Risk both days for eastern VA, eastern MD, DE, and southern NJ. Moderate Risk also for southwest IN, southern IL, western KY.
