24 April 2003 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Thursday, April 24:

*** Disease Update - 24 April *** In southern Florida..... downy mildew is present on cantaloupe, squash, and watermelons in many locations across southwest Florida. Favorable weather a few weeks ago led to an increase in the number and severity of outbreaks. Disease is present on cucumbers and squash near Palm Beach, and on squash in Homestead. In Texas.....reports from state that downy mildew is widespread on cantaloupe in Hidalgo and Star Counties in deep south Texas. Recent weather has been favorable.

***** The known sources do not threaten other regions for the foreseeable future ***** A vigorous storm system is moving from the south-central U.S. to areas east. Much rain is expected across the Gulf coast states into the Southeast during the next few days. However.... the source areas in deep south TX and southern FL are far from the main track of the frontal system, lessening the system's effects on trajectories and weather. Conditions at the TX source are unfavorable for the next several days. Low Risk to cucurbit crops in this region. In southern FL.... unfavorable conditions on Thursday will be followed be 3 to 4 days of mixed conditions (partly cloudy skies, chance of afternoon showers). Low Risk here on Thursday. Moderate Risk Friday and Saturday for southern and central FL. Mixed conditions expected Sunday and Monday.
