5 September 2002 Downy Mildew Forecasts

***** Disease Update - 5 September ***** Two more sources of downy mildew have been reported. Gerald Holmes reports a serious outbreak on winter squash in Lenoir County in eastern NC. This has occurred in test plots at the Cunningham Research Center. He also states that it should be safe to assume that downy mildew is widespread in the NC coastal plains. Users should refer to the Eastern NC forecast for details. Dan Egel informs us that a moderately serious outbreak of DM is occurring on research plots in Knox County, IN near the town of Vincennes. Infections on pumpkins have been present for at least a week. This source is being added to the forecasts.

***** Disease Update - 3 September ***** We have two new sources of downy mildew to report. Downy mildew has broken out again on an experimental plot at the Coastal REC in Charleston, SC. This is a moderately serious infection in a 1-acre field of cantaloupe. Recent weather has been favorable in this area. Our thanks also to Steve Johnston in New Jersey.... who informs us of a moderately serious outbreak of downy mildew in winter squash near the town of Carney's Point in southwest NJ (Salem County). Weather conditions were unfavorable for most of the crop production period but have recently turned favorable. The field is being harvested at this time. Whether or not this field continues as a source post-harvest remains unknown.

FORECAST SUMMARY - Tuesday, September 5
