***** Disease Update - 15 October ***** Our thanks to Plinio Castilla in FL..... who informs us of an outbreak of downy mildew on summer squash in Dade County, FL near the town of Homestead. About 30% of a 30-acre field is infected. Disease activity was initially light but has increased in the past several days.
FORECAST SUMMARY - Tuesday, October 22
***** The Weather.... (Eastern United States).... A stationary front lies across the Gulf Coast region where it will remain for the next several days. Light rain showers are falling in the Carolinas this morning. They will move out by midday but clouds will remain. Scattered showers are possible south of the stationary front (mainly FL) today and Tuesday. Some light rain is also possible in parts of the Southeast each day under partly to mostly cloudy skies. To the north, a fairly weak but fast-moving frontal system will scoot across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Partly cloudy skies for most areas the next two days, but mostly cloudy with a chance of light rain near the system. High presssure will build into the north-central U.S. behind the fast-moving front. Highs ranging from the 50's and 60's north to 70's and 80's south.
***** The Forecast.... Trajectiories from the known sources tend to move slowly southwest or hang near the source area Tuesday and Wednesday. The better chances for disease development will be in the Southeast, where cloudy skies and a chance of rain are expected in most areas during the next two days. Favorable weather for disease development Tuesday and Wednesday in the Southeast. Favorable weather in the Carolinas Tuesday giving way to mostly unfavorable conditions on Wednesday. Mostly unfavorable weather near the sources in eastern VA and southern NJ the next two days. Unfavorable conditions near the Vincennes, IN source region Tuesday and Wednesday. This source may have had a frost recently as well.
