25 June 2002 Downy Mildew Forecasts

 

FORECAST SUMMARY - Tuesday, June 25:

*** Disease Update - 20 June *** Downy mildew has been confirmed in Macon County, GA and Florence County, SC. A moderately serious outbreak of downy mildew was confirmed on summer squash in Macon County, GA late today. Little is known about this infection. Lesions are small on the sample submitted, and David Langston states he does not believe the disease has been present for very long. Recent weather has been unfavorable until the past couple of days. The Florence County, SC outbreak is also on summer squash. Small lesions were found on a small fraction of abandoned plants in a field of less than 1 acre. These outbreaks will be included in analysis and evalutation of the forecasts.

*** Weather favorable for disease development is expected in the Southeast Tuesday and Wednesday *** A sultry air mass lies over the Southeast. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in many areas both days. There is HIGH RISK for southern and central FL Tuesday and Wednesday. Cucurbit crops in the southern half of GA are also at Strongly Moderate to HIGH RISK each day. For the Charleston source area...... there is HIGH RISK near the source and Strongly Moderate Risk for eastern SC Tuesday and Wednesday. East-central NC will be at Moderate Risk for Wednesday's transport event. Low Risk to cucurbit crops elsewhere Tuesday and Wednesday.
