27 August 2002 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY - Tuesday, August 27:

*** Epidemic Update - 22 August *** There are two new reports of downy mildew. One is a moderately serious outbreak on pumpkins near Goldsboro, NC (Wayne County). This site will be combined with the site in Edgecombe County near Pinetops, NC under the heading of "Eastern NC". The other report comes from Accomack County, VA (on the DelMarVa peninsula) near the town of Painter. Downy mildew is appearing in test plots of pumpkins. Recent weather has not been favorable and this source is of questionable severity. We are adding it to the forecasts.

*** Rainy, unsettled weather will dominate the Southeast and lower mid-Atlantic states for the next several days. *** Conditions will be mixed near the sources in southwest GA, but quite favorable in nearly all other locations. A stalled frontal boundary, strong influx of moisture, and upper-atmospheric support are all combining to create this situation. In Florida and southern GA.... HIGH RISK for central and northern FL on Tuesday, with Moderate Risk across southern GA. HIGH RISK for central FL Wednesday, Moderate Risk for southwest GA and far southeast AL. Low Risk elsewhere. In NC and VA.... HIGH RISK for central and eastern NC Tuesday and Wednesday. Strongly Moderate Risk Tuesday for southeast MD and a broad swath of eastern and southern VA. HIGH RISK on Wednesday for southeast MD, and eastern and south-central VA. Low Risk elsewhere Tuesday and Wednesday. Unsettled, disease-favorable weather is expected to continue along the eastern seaboard through at least Thursday.
