22 August 2002 Downy Mildew Forecasts

 

FORECAST SUMMARY - Thursday, August 22:

*** Epidemic Update - 22 August *** There are two new reports of downy mildew. One is a moderately serious outbreak on pumpkins near Goldsboro, NC (Wayne County). This site will be combined with the site in Edgecombe County near Pinetops, NC under the heading of "Eastern NC". The other report comes from Accomack County, VA (on the DelMarVa peninsula) near the town of Painter. Downy mildew is appearing in test plots of pumpkins. Recent weather has not been favorable and this source is of questionable severity. We are adding it to the forecasts.

*** Typical summertime weather is expected through the weekend. *** High pressure is moving off the U.S. east coast. A cold front will be dropping southward into the mid-Atlantic states during the next several days. Partly cloudy skies and scattered showers will accompany its passage. Isolated to scattered afternoon showers are possible in parts of the Southeast. Most areas will be hot and humid. Cooler, drier weather for locations north of cold front. In the Southeast..... Moderate to Strongly Moderate Risk for central FL (Thursday and Friday) and northern FL (Thursday). Weakly Moderate Risk for southern GA Thursday and Friday. Mixed conditions are expected in this region Saturday and Sunday. In the lower mid-Atlantic states..... Low Risk near the eastern NC source region Thursday and Friday. Mixed conditions expected on Saturday, unfavorable conditions probable on Sunday. Low Risk near the eastern VA source on Thursday. However, some airborne spores may survive transport to the northeast and get washed out tonight. Moderate Risk for the near-coast areas of northern NJ, NY, and southern New England for Thursday's event. Friday's trajectory will move east. Moderate Risk for eastern VA and eastern MD. Mixed to mostly favorable conditions are expected in eastern VA on Saturday, unfavorable weather on Sunday.
