FORECAST SUMMARY: Thursday, May 3:
*** Disease Update, 3 May: Our thanks to Ken Pernezny, with the University of Florida Everglades Research and Education Center. He informs us that downy mildew has been discovered in a 1.5 acre field of cucumber, located near Boynton Beach, FL, in Palm Beach County (due east of Immokalee). This is a serious outbreak, with 80% of the field infected. With downy mildew already in the Immokalee area..... and now this new report from over on the east coast...... it appears likely that other areas of disease activity also exist in southern FL. Immokalee will continue to represent the disease scattered in this area. We will incorporate our knowledge of the activity near Boynton Beach into our analyses and risk assessments.
*** Favorable conditions for disease development in southern FL Thursday and Friday. *** Wet weather will continue in southern FL today and Friday, followed by dry conditions Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the Southeast will be dry through Saturday except for a few isolated showers along the southern coast. Clear to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures will prevail. Trajectories from the southern FL source region move southwest the next 3 days, so any disease development should remain limited to the source region. Strongly Moderate Risk for southern Florida Thursday and Friday. Low Risk elsewhere. Low Risk region-wide Saturday and Sunday.
