FORECAST SUMMARY: Thursday, May 10:
*** Disease Update, 3 May: Our thanks to Ken Pernezny, with the University of Florida Everglades Research and Education Center. He informs us that downy mildew has been discovered in a 1.5 acre field of cucumber, located near Boynton Beach, FL, in Palm Beach County (due east of Immokalee). This is a serious outbreak, with 80% of the field infected. With downy mildew already in the Immokalee area..... and now this new report from the east coast...... it appears likely that other areas of disease activity also exist in southern FL. Immokalee will continue to represent the disease scattered in this area. We will incorporate our knowledge of the activity near Boynton Beach into our analyses and risk assessments.
*** No long-range threat is expected through the weekend. *** The weather is mostly unfavorable for disease development. Trajectories move southeast each day through Saturday, and no long-range transport is anticipated for Sunday. Isolated showers may provide sufficient moisture for some localized disease development in southern FL. Otherwise, Low Risk to cucurbit crops Thursday through Sunday.
