FORECAST SUMMARY: Thursday, August 23:
*** Disease Update - August 23: David Langston reports two new outbreaks of downy mildew in northeast Georgia. Both discoveries are on pumpkins. One in Hart County is serious, the other in Union County is much weaker. We are adding a source for Hartwell, GA to represent these outbreaks. Our thanks also to Robert Wick at the University of Massachusetts. He informs us of an outbreak of downy mildew on winter squash in Franklin County, Massachusetts near the town of South Deerfield. This site is being added to the forecasts.
*** Two fronts are moving through the eastern U.S. Thursday and Friday *** The first is now in the Ohio Valley. The second will push down from the north tonight and Friday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will accompany the fronts, with various areas at risk of disease development. On Thursday.... there is Moderate Risk for eastern KY, southern OH, western WV, southern VT, southern NH, all of MA, northern CT, northern RI, and central NC. Low Risk elsewhere. On Friday... there is Strongly Moderate Risk for northwest TN and western KY. There is Moderate Risk for eastern TN, southwest NC, northeast and eastern GA, and northwest and western SC. Low Risk otherwise. Saturday and Sunday... unfavorable conditions are expected along the eastern seaboard, while mixed conditions for disease development are expected in the Ohio Valley region.
