3 October 2000 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Tuesday, October 3:

*** September 27 Disease Update: First reports of downy mildew from Wisconsin and Illinois. *** Our thanks to Dan Egel in Indiana.... who confirms outbreaks of downy mildew in Walworth County, WI and McHenry County, IL. These counties are adjacent to each other in the southeast WI / northeast IL region. Other information indicates that many other growers in this area have downy mildew, and disease has been present since the beginning of October. As with the recent NJ report..... since disease has been present for several weeks, it is likely that other growers in the region have downy mildew. Since these new outbreaks are only 25 miles apart and disease is present elsewhere in the area, we have selected Lake Geneva as a central location from which to launch the forecast trajectories.

*** Unsettled weather in the Southeast and the Midwest during midweek *** Tropical moisture is spreading northward from southern FL today and Wednesday, and showery weather near fronts in the Midwest will provide favorable disease conditions in that area of the country. Weather near the other known sources will be warm and dry. Strongly Moderate Risk for central FL today. HIGH RISK for central and northern FL Wednesday, with Strongly Moderate Risk for southern GA. In the Midwest.... Strongly Moderate Risk for southeast WI and northeast IL today. Moderate Risk for northern and central IL and eastern MO. On Wednesday... Strongly Moderate Risk for southeast WI, northern IL, southeast IA, and northern MO. Low Risk in the mid-Atlantic region Tuesday and Wednesday. Extended Outlook..... the first major surge of cold air this fall is expected to move into the country's midsection Thursday and Friday, spreading eastward during the weekend. Frosts/freezes are likely over a broad section of the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes / Ohio Valley regions this weekend.
