FORECAST DISCUSSION: Thursday, October 12:
*** Disease Update *** As expected, a hard freeze occurred last weekend in much of the central U.S., including near the known sources in WI/IL and OK. A hard freeze also occurred in the southern Appalachian Mountains, affecting the sources in far northern GA / southwest NC. Frosts and freezes (lows in the low to mid-30's) occurred in many sections of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast as well. Growers nearest the Atlantic coastline are the most likely to have remain unaffected by the recent cold snap. The disease season is likely over for growers where a hard freeze occurred. Barring any information to the contrary these source areas will be rated as Low Threat / Low Risk for the remainder of the season. The situation is not as clear-cut along the East Coast and Southeast. Any information concerning disease status is appreciated. Please contact the Forecast Center via email or with our Report Form, both available from our Homepage.
*** Dry weather this weekend for much of the eastern U.S. *** ..... continuing the trend started early this week. Temperatures will be near the seasonal norms with highs in the 70's and 80's, lows in the 40's and 50's. Long-range transport and deposition are highly unlikely. Localized disease development is possible in those areas where dew or fog may form, but otherwise, Low Risk for growers through Sunday.
*** Detailed forecasts are (and have been) unavailable this week as our staff has been involved with preparations for conferences overseas. They will resume on Tuesday.
