FORECAST DISCUSSION: Thursday, August 31:
*** Our apologies for the late posting of Tuesday's (and now Thursday's) forecasts. Network difficulties (the apparent cause of the problem) at the Forecast Center have been rectified and we hope there are no further delays.
*** Epidemic Update - 31 August: Downy Mildew has been discovered on experimental plots in southeast Maryland, near the town of Salisbury in Wicomico County. This is a serious outbreak on pumpkins. Some plots have been treated, some have not. This source is being added to the forecasts.
*** Epidemic Update - 29 August: A serious outbreak of Downy Mildew has been discovered on summer squash near the border of Duplin and Wayne counties in eastern NC. These counties border Sampson County, site of the previously known outbreak. Given the proximity of the known disease locations, the launch site for the eastern NC sources has been changed to Mount Olive, NC, which is more centrally positioned amid Duplin, Wayne, and Sampson counties.
*** Favorable weather for disease development will plague the Southeast and mid-Atlantic regions through the weekend. *** The heaviest rains will be near the southern Appalchian Mountains into the deep South. However, there will be plenty of showers and thunderstorms along the eastern Seaboard states each day with mixed sky conditions. Growers in the following areas will be at Strongly Moderate to HIGH RISK from Thursday through Sunday: Florida, Georgia, eastern TN, western SC, NC, most of central and eastern Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and eastern PA. A chance of showers and thunderstorms will perist for most areas of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic early next week. Growers in OK will remain at Low Risk for the forseeable future.
