1 August 2000 Downy Mildew Forecasts

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Tuesday, August 1: *** Disease Update: First report from North Carolina *** Downy Mildew was reported on research plots of summer squash in Hendersonville, NC on July 31. This is a minor outbreak but recent weather has been favorable for disease development.

*** Disease focus is on the eastern U.S. this week *** Weather features at the surface and aloft have combined to produce a tropical environment in the eastern U.S. this week. Skies are typically partly cloudy, with increasing clouds during the afternoon and scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Growers in Florida and Georgia are at Strongly Moderate Risk both days. South Carolina and western North Carolina are at Moderate Risk both days. WARNING: Downy Mildew is likely present in other areas of the Southeast and lower mid-Atlantic regions. Conditions this week will be favorable for survivable transport and deposition of spores. Growers in the entire mid-Atlantic region (NC, VA, MD, DE, PA, NJ) should remain alert for signs of disease during and after this period of disease-favorable weather. Growers in southeast TX are at Low Risk Tuesday and Wednesday.
