FORECAST DISCUSSION: Monday, August 30: *** SPECIAL NOTE: Your forecaster will be away from August 19 through August 29. Beginning August 16 and continuing through August 29th, abbreviated one-page forecasts will be produced. These will consist of regional weather descriptions and trajectories from the remaining active disease areas. Please access these forecasts from the yearly archive pages rather than from the "current forecast". ***
*** Disease Update *** James Lamondia in Connecticut reports that blue mold has been discovered on Nantucket Island, off the coast of Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. The discovery of this moderate source on August 21st was in ornamental tobacco with several generations of lesions on the plants.
For today's forecasts......Mostly sunny, dry, and cooler-than-normal weather for the growing regions early this week. Obvious exception is the coastal areas of NC and southeast VA where Hurricane Dennis is bringing clouds and rain. The effects from Dennis will lessen during the next two days as it moves farther east. However, the long-range is in doubt as Dennis is forecast to stall out and then move back to the west or northwest later this week. In the meantime.....no long-range transport is expected Monday or Tuesday, with Low Risk to growers. TK
***** NOTE: These forecasts/outlooks only apply to disease development from airborne transport of spores!!! We do not have the capability to ascertain blue mold development by other means, such as transplanting of infected seedlings, nor will we attempt to do so. Please consult the Extension Service personnel in your area if you have concerns about these matters! *****
