FORECAST DISCUSSION: Monday, May 19, 1997 - **** Widespread HIGH RISK areas in the Southeast early this week **** Weather conditions in the Southeast U.S. are very favorable for blue mold today and Tuesday, and there are SERIOUS Threats from the Gainesville, FL and Reno, GA source areas. Long-range transport is expected for spores released from these locations today and Tuesday. Rainout of airborne spores can occur from Florida and Georgia northward through the Carolinas. HIGH RISK areas include northern Florida, southern and central Georgia, and South Carolina. Growers in central and eastern North Carolina face a Strongly Moderate risk of disease development. The areas in greatest danger appear to be southern GA and the coastal plains of South Carolina, since they have the potential to be affected by spores from both source areas. Conditions in the Southeast should improve by midweek.
The southern Texas sources present only localized threats the next two days. Conditions will be favorable for blue mold, but no long-range threat is anticipated from these sources. Extended forecasts indicate that the weather will remain somewhat favorable for disease development in this region through the week. TK
SERIOUS SOURCE THREATS: Gainesville, FL; Reno, GA
Northern Florida, Southern & Central Georgia, South Carolina
***** NOTE: These forecasts/outlooks only apply to disease development from airborne transport of spores!!! We do not have the capability to ascertain blue mold development by other means, such as transplanting of infected seedlings, nor will we attempt to do so. Please consult the Extension Service personnel in your area if you have concerns about these matters! *****
