FORECAST DISCUSSION: Wednesday, July 30, 1997 - *** The trouble spot today is the Southern Appalachian Mountains. *** Growing areas in the Carolinas, southern Virginia, and the mountains are enduring some very favorable weather for blue mold today. Cloudy skies and showers are common, due to a stationary front in the Southern U.S. SE Kentucky, S West Virginia, SW Virginia, E Tennessee, W NC, and far N Georgia are HIGH RISK areas for today. The front will sag southward, so conditions will improve for Thursday. However, mountain growers will still be at Moderate Risk on Thursday.
The other growing regions in the Ohio Valley, Great lakes, upper mid-Atlantic and the Northeast are under the influence of a large high pressure area. Sources in these regions are Low Threats today and Thursday, and growers are at Low Risk of disease development. Looking to the future, it appears that unfavorable weather for blue mold will persist over the various growing areas for at least part of the weekend. TK
