13 May 1996 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST DISCUSSION: Monday, May 13 - The situation with the Florida and Cuba sources over the weekend worked out well for the farmers. Survivable transport from the N FL sites was unlikely on Saturday, as there was too much midday and afternoon sunshine before the showers came. Trajectories from the Cuban sources weren't threatening, and safe transport for the spores was hindered by the sun exposure in that area. Any disease movement from the N FL sources was almost certainly confined to the immediate locality, but growers who received rain should keep sharp watch for signs of the disease. The S TX region experienced scattered rain showers both inland and near the coast. As mentioned before, this may serve to help blue mold on the wild tobacco.

The next couple of days look good. Pathways from the eastern sources will be away from growing areas, and the S TX-area spores are heading mostly north and won't threaten any production regions, either.

HIGH-RISK SOURCES: None
