2 June 2003 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY:
Monday, June 2:

***** Disease Update - 2 June ***** Blue mold may have spread to the mountains of NC. We have unconfirmed reports of blue mold in the central NC mountains. If true, this is not a surprising development. Airborne spores were likely deposited in the region a couple of weeks ago and recent weather has been favorable. If the outbreaks are confirmed, we will report it promptly. Growers across the mid-Atlantic region, from the mountains to the coast, are strongly encouraged to scout their plants for signs of disease. Unsettled weather is expected in the eastern U.S. during the middle and latter parts of this week.

***** Disease Update - 28 May ***** We have the first report of blue mold from the southern Appalachian Mountains. Blue mold has been discovered in float beds in Greene County, Tennessee. Fresh lesions are present with strong sporulation. This is a moderate-strength source. We are adding this site to the forecasts. With blue mold established in GA and FL, and now having been discovered in the southern Appalachian Mountains, we will be dropping our foreign sites out of the forecast rotation. These sites will continue to be monitored and any threatening situations will be reported.

***** Unfavorable weather on Monday will give way to unsettled, disease-favorable weather on Tuesday *** Sunny to partly cloudy skies are the rule on Monday with only a few scattered afternoon showers expected in the southern parts of the Southeast. However, a low pressure and frontal system are approaching from the west. Clouds and rain will overspread the region from west to east beginning tonight and continuing through Tuesday. Airborne spores from the southern GA / northern FL region will have impact on the Carolinas. Monday's transport event from the mountains is a Low Threat event. Tuesday's transport event from the mountains will mainly affect the source region. On Monday.... Moderate Risk for northern FL, southern and eastern GA, and western and central sections of the Carolinas. Low Risk otherwise. On Tuesday..... HIGH Risk for the southern Appalachian Mountains. Strongly Moderate to HIGH Risk for northern FL, southern and eastern GA, and central and eastern sections of the Carolinas. Low Risk otherwise. Unsettled weather is expected to continue in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions for much of the rest of the week.
