13 August 2003 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Wednesday, August 13:

***** Disease Update - 11 August ***** Blue mold has been discovered in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Disease is scattered through the county and the infections appear to be of recent origin. Blue mold continues to spread in the Ohio Valley (new counties in KY and southeast IN) and the southern Appalachian Mountains (Yadkin County, NC).

***** A chance of mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms will continue in the eastern U.S. Wednesday and Thursday ***** A stationary front that now lies from the Northeast down through the Ohio Valley will dissipate later today. High pressure over the Great Lakes will build southeastward into the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic on Thursday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible everywhere but the Great Lakes on Wednesday. As high pressure moves in on Thursday..... expect dry weather across the northern sections..... mostly isolated showers in the Ohio Valley.... and scattered afternoon shower activity in the mountains, lower mid-Atlantic, and Southeast. Highs will be in the 80's to low 90's. A low pressure area in the Gulf will move west. A tropical wave now in the Bahamas will affect the FL peninsula as it moves west. Neither system will affect the potential for disease development.

***** For the southern Appalachian Mountains, Southeast, and lower mid-Atlantic...... mixed conditions will dominate the weather scene. Moderate Risk Wednesday and Thursday for southern GA and southern and eastern SC. Low Risk otherwise.

***** In the upper mid-Atlantic and Northeast.... favorable conditions today will be replaced by dry weather on Thursday. Long-range transport to other areas is unlikely. HIGH Risk Wednesday for southern New England. Moderate Risk for southeast PA and northern MD. Low Risk on Thursday in these areas.

***** West of the mountains...... mostly favorable conditions on Wednesday will give way to mostly unfavorable conditions on Thursday. Trajectories will be moving to the west or northwest. Strongly Moderate Risk for the growing regions in the Ohio and TN Valleys on Wednesday. Weakly Moderate Risk for these areas on Thursday.

TK

Areas at Strongly Moderate or HIGH Risk during the past week: all U.S. growing regions east of the Mississippi River
