8 April 2002 Blue Mold Forecasts

 

FORECAST SUMMARY: Monday, April 8:

*** Disease Update - 8 April: Additional reports of blue mold from southern GA and northern FL *** Blue mold has been discovered in plant beds in Alachua County, FL and Pierce County in southeast GA. Plants from both of these locations are being moved to the field, and field infection has already been observed at the Alachua County site. With the addition of these new sources, we are adjusting our forecast as follows..... Sources in Berrien and Pierce counties in southern GA will be illustrated as the Southern Georgia forecast. Sources in Hamilton and Alachua counties in northern FL will be illustrated as the Northern Florida forecast. The sources in western Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico will go to an abbreviated format. They will be expanded if the situation dictates.

*** The sources in northern FL and southern GA are significant threats Monday and Tuesday. *** A cold front is approaching the eastern United States. Conditions for disease development will become increasingly favorable as the front draws closer. On Monday.... trajectories move to the north on a path west of the Appalachians. Mixed conditions for disease development are expected. Low Risk near the source areas. Moderate Risk for northern GA, central and eastern TN, central and eastern KY, southeast IN, and southern OH. Low risk beyond. On Tuesday..... the front will be moving into the eastern U.S. Conditions will be favorable for disease development. Moderate Risk for northern FL. Strongly Moderate Risk for southern GA. HIGH RISK for northeast GA, northwest SC, northeast TN, and western NC. Strongly Moderate Risk for central NC. Moderate Risk for northeast NC, MD, and all but the extreme southwest portion of VA. Low Risk otherwise. Separate forecasts for Monday and Tuesday are available for the northern FL and southern GA source areas. Elsewhere.... trajectories from the other known sources do not threaten any production areas Monday or Tuesday. Low Threat from the other known sources Monday and Tuesday.

*** In the extended period... the cold front is expected to stall out and turn stationary over the southeast U.S. during the latter part of the week. Conditions favorable for disease development are expected for at least part of this region in the Wednesday to Friday time frame.
