3 April 2002 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Wednesday, April 3:

*** Disease Update - 3 April: First report of blue mold from Florida *** Blue mold has been discovered in Hamilton County, in northern Florida. The disease was first seen on Sunday, March 31 in local plant beds. Plants from these beds are being transplanted. Our thanks to Tom Kucharek, Florida State Coordinator, for this information. We will pass along any other news as it becomes available. Due to their close proximity, we will combine this site with the one for southern Georgia.

*** Disease Update - 1 April: This information comes to us from Paul Bertrand, our Georgia State Coordinator. Blue mold was found in a plant house in Berrien County on March 27. This is a small source that has been active for about 2 weeks. The house owner plans to salvage most plants by transplanting this week. The former source in nearby Tift County was destroyed. The Forecast Center will continue to use the Eldorado, GA starting point for trajectories from this area.

*** Active weather is expected in the Southeast on Wednesday *** A cold front is moving through the Southeast today. Showers and thunderstorms are likely. Conditions for survivable transport and deposition are favorable ahead of the approaching front. HIGH RISK for southern GA, northern FL, and southern SC on Wednesday. Trajectories will turn to the south on Thursday. Mixed conditions for disease development are expected. Moderate Risk for southern GA and northern FL on Thursday. Elsewhere..... trajectories from the other known sources present little danger the next two days. Local conditions may favor disease development in parts of southern TX or eastern Mexico. Low Threat to the U.S. production areas from the other sources on Wednesday and Thursday.
