10 April 2002 Blue Mold Forecasts

 

FORECAST SUMMARY: Wednesday, April 10:

*** Disease Update - 10 April: Blue mold has been reported in Atkinson and Coffee Counties in southern GA *** Both outbreaks were discovered in greenhouses. On a scale of severity from 1 to 5 (with 5 the highest), these new outbreaks rate a 1 or a 2.

*** Disease Update - 8 April: Additional reports of blue mold from southern GA and northern FL *** Blue mold has been discovered in plant beds in Alachua County, FL and Pierce County in southeast GA. Plants from both of these locations are being moved to the field, and field infection has already been observed at the Alachua County site. With the addition of these new sources, we are adjusting our forecast as follows..... Sources in Berrien and Pierce counties in southern GA will be illustrated as the Southern Georgia forecast. Sources in Hamilton and Alachua counties in northern FL will be illustrated as the Northern Florida forecast. The sources in western Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico will go to an abbreviated format. They will be expanded if the situation dictates.

*** Unsettled weather is expected in the southeast U.S. The sources in northern FL and southern GA will continue to pose problems for other growing areas *** The cold front that moved into the region on Tuesday will weaken and turn stationary over the region Wednesday and Thursday. Conditions will be favorable for survivable transport and deposition of airborne spores. On Wednesday.... trajectories from northern FL and southern GA move to the west. There is HIGH RISK near the source region, and Strongly Moderate Risk for southern AL. On Thursday.... trajectories move to the northwest and north, right through the growing areas of the Tennessee and Ohio River valleys. Conditions will be favorable for disease development. There is HIGH RISK for northern FL and southern GA. Strongly Moderate Risk is expected for AL and most of TN, with the exception of the far west. There is Moderate Risk for far western TN, central and eastern KY, southern OH, extreme southwest VA, and western WV. Other areas will be at Low Risk. The other known sources in southern TX and elsewhere do not threaten other regions Wednesday or Thursday.

*** Extended Outlook: Unsettled weather is expected in the southeast U.S. Friday through Sunday *** Growing regions to the north of the southern GA and northern FL sources are likely to be affected at some point.
