*** Disease Update - 16 May *** Blue mold in Wilson County, NC. Tom Melton has confirmed blue mold in two fields in Wilson County. One is near the town of Bailey. The other is several miles west of Elm City. He describes both infections as light. Growers at both locations are applying sprays.
*** There is a threat to the mid-Atlantic growing regions on Monday *** One front is moving out of NC on Monday, while another cold front approaches the Southeast U.S. from the west. This next cold front will move through the region on Tuesday. Unsettled weather is the result. Conditions are favorable for disease development over northern and western sections of the Southeast on Monday, and will be favorable on Tuesday for most of GA and the Carolinas. On Monday, there is Strongly Moderate Risk for north-central NC and central VA. There is Moderate Risk for western MD and southern PA. Low Risk beyond. On Tuesday.... the trajectory from east-central NC moves to the northeast. Strongly Moderate Risk for tobacco crops in north-central and northeast NC, eastern VA, and southern MD. Elsewhere.... conditions are unfavorable for disease development in northern FL, and trajectories from western Cuba and southern TX pose no threat to tobacco crops in other regions.
