FORECAST SUMMARY: Wednesday, May 16:
*** Disease Update - 16 May *** Blue mold in Wilson County, NC. Tom Melton has confirmed blue mold in two fields in Wilson County. One is near the town of Bailey. The other is several miles west of Elm City. He describes both infections as light. Growers at both locations are applying sprays.
*** Disease Update - 11 May *** We have a blue mold report from NC. Tom Melton reports that blue mold was discovered in a field in southern Nash County, near the town of Bailey. Infected plants were scattered near adjacent corners of two small fields. No sporulation was observed and the grower will apply Acrobat immediately. This is very weak source. Since the reports from eastern Wake, southern Franklin, and now southern Nash Counties are so close to one another (within 20 miles), we will continue to use Rolesville as a launch point for the forecast trajectories.
*** Unsettled weather in the Carolinas Wednesday and Thursday *** A stationary front will lie across the Carolinas during the next two days. Conditions will be favorable for disease development. There is Strongly Moderate Risk for commercial tobacco in north-central NC, northwest NC, southwest VA, and south-central VA both Wednesday and Thursday. Elsewhere, high pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico is keeping much of the Southeast U.S. hot and dry. Similar weather will be found in Texas. Low Risk to other tobacco-growing regions Wednesday and Thursday.
