10 August 2001 Blue Mold Forecasts

FORECAST SUMMARY: Friday, August 10:

*** Forecast are abbreviated today. A weather synopsis / disease development summary follows. Trajectories from the various source areas are given below.

*** Disease Update - 10 August *** First report of blue mold in Connecticut. Jim LaMonia informs us that blue mold was discovered in Hartford County, near the town of Enfield, on August 7. Lesions are one week old or less and there is some fresh sporulation. Your Forecaster has had to spend a substantial amount of time away from his duties recently. County maps will be updated this weekend to reflect the reports we have received during the past several weeks.

Eastern U. S. Weather...... A cold front now lies just south of the Great Lakes and extends northeastward into the upper mid-Atlantic states and New England. The front will move slowly south and east today, then get bogged down somewhere over the mid-Atlantic states and Ohio Valley Saturday and Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely near the front. Scattered mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are expected to the south of the front, where some very humid air is already in place. Most areas will see some sunshine each day, though locations near the front will see less than others. Mostly above-normal temperatures are expected with highs in the upper 80's and 90's, lows in the upper 60's and 70's.

*** Unsettled weather will dominate the forecasts this weekend. *** Long-range transport events appear unlikely. However, scattered daily showers.... more numerous near the front.... will bring mixed to mostly favorable conditions for disease development to U.S. growing regions this weekend. In NC/VA... Low Risk today, Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday. In MD and PA.... Moderate Risk today, Strongly Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday. In southern New England... Strongly Moderate Risk today, Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday. In the southern Appalachian Mountains..... Moderate Risk today, Strongly Moderate Risk Saturday, Moderate Risk Sunday. In the Ohio Valley (IL, IN, OH, western WV, KY, and TN)... Strongly Moderate Risk today, Moderate Risk Saturday and Sunday.

*** We strongly encourage growers to monitor their plants for signs of disease. Diligent scouting and prompt reporting of blue mold are essential if one wishes to derive maximum benefit from the services we provide. ***
